Questions to Ask a Lawyer Before Hiring Them

Many lawyers will address the following items during your initial consultation without prompting, but if they do not you should make it a point to ask the following questions:

Just because I qualify for bankruptcy protection does that make it a good idea in my situation?

Have you ever handled a bankruptcy case with facts similar to my case?

Can you give me a brief overview of the likely timeline of events in my case?

What is your policy regarding returning client phone calls?

Are there any obvious "red flag" issues in my case and what can we do about them?

Will you (the lawyer) handle my case personally or will it be given to someone else to handle?

What are my non-bankruptcy options?

What are the differences between the different chapters of bankruptcy?

Does it appear that I may lose any property as a result of filing bankruptcy?

Do you use a written fee agreement?

What percentage of your cases are bankruptcy cases? (as opposed to divorces, criminal law, etc.)

Have your previous clients been happy with the service you have provided them?  Do you have any client testimonials I could read?
